In My Life
I had a cancer scare last week. I was nervous going into the doctors office that first day but when the doctor sent me in for more tests I started to get scared.
I didn’t tell too many people what was happening but the few people I did tell were amazing. So many things were running through my head and I was so thankful to have had people that were there for me.
I had a bit of a quarter...

Bible College is a funny little world.
NERD!!
I would like to take this time to acknowledge that I am a giant nerd. I am now absolutely OK with this but for a long time I either had no idea or I was in complete denial.
These days I really enjoy Doctor Who, Battlestar Galactica, and FireFly, I like playing card games full of dragons and elves with my friends and talking for hours about how George Lucas has destroyed the memory of...

Jeff is Dead: The Movie Update
Dylan (the Director) and I finally got a chance to go back and have a watch yesterday. It was hard to get to it with all the work we needed to put into the film we did in the summer.
It still needs work but it is looking good and still makes me laugh very hard. In a way it was frustrating being away from it for so long but really it was good to have some distance and be able look at it with...
Embracing Awesome part 2
I was watching The Daily Show last night and Jon Stewart said something that really reminded me of my commitment to Embrace Awesome.
He was talking about the terrible shooting in Arizona this past weekend. He was saying that it’s so easy to focus on the one person and say that people are awful, but he said to look into the people who were shot, and look at their lives and all the good...
Twenty-Eleven
I had some great times in 2010 and I had some of the toughest times of my life.
But then we finish off that rotation around the sun, so we think that’s a time for change, and to be honest, no matter how arbitrary it is, I’m embracing it as a time to think about my goals and aspirations.
I’m extremely excited about this year. I have no clue what this year will hold but...
Best of 2010
Here are my picks for the best of the year.
FILM
Best Comedy Movie
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
Scott Pilgrim was one of those movies that I instantly loved. I wanted to watch it again. Then when I did watch it again I wanted to watch it again again. I actually lost sleep thinking about how great it was.
Best Drama Movie
Black Swan
I’m so back and forth on this one. I...

Merry Christmas
And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
I’m at work and I can’t concentrate. I’m like a kid at some sort of holiday. I just want to eat candy and run around in circle (as was the...
Death to Tinman
It’s been a couple years since I’ve seen this. I recommend that you don’t start watching it unless you have the time to watch it all the way through.
This is actually pretty close to Frank Baum’s origin story for the Tinman. Especially in how dark it was.
Enjoy.
OBAMN
Since September some friends and I have been doing a movie night once a week called Obscure But Awesome Movie Night or OBAMN for short. This is idea introduced to us by our friend Trevor Price.
We all take turns picking the movie. There are a few rules that I’ll summarize here:
1. The film must be obscure.*
2. The film must be awesome.
3. You have to give a short presentation before the...
Murphy's Law (as I understand it)
If there is more than one possible outcome eventually the less desirable outcome will happen.
Therefore if you do a number of things on a daily basis and each thing can have a negative outcome, eventually you will have a terrible day.
So it is completely possible that your bus could be late, your boss yells at you, your computer crashes in the middle of a meeting, and your new shoes start...

Embracing Awesome
I’m a fan of the site notalwaysright.com. Especially this one. (True story by the way) If you aren’t familiar with the site, it’s stories people tell about when they worked customer service and had to deal with difficult customers. Something I know way too much about as I’ve worked at three different record stores.
Like the time when we were having a sale on rock T-shirts...
The Christmas Jesus Juke
I’ve been enjoying Jon Acuff’s blog ‘Stuff Christians Like.’ I enjoy it for different reasons than Stephanie Drury’s ‘Stuff Christian Culture Likes.’
In his latest entry he talks about the Jesus Juke.
And isn’t this the season for the Jesus Juke.

Jono! You're in the shot!
It was a year ago today that my friend Jonathan died from complications due to swine flu.
People say that everything happens for a reason. I don’t believe that. I never really have. I believe good things can come out of terrible situations but I still haven’t seen it.
He was young and he was starting a new chapter in his life. And from a selfish stand point he was moving from...
Can you say that in Star Wars?
I was thinking about life and I think it comes down to this question. Are you a Luke Skywalker or are you a Han Solo?
Allow me to explain.
Luke Skywalker was great don’t get me wrong, he was single his entire life but that’s only because he accidentally fell for his sister. The problem with Luke wasn’t that he didn’t do anything with his life, he helped save the...
Women in Film 2
My friend wrote this blog post yesterday. Read it and come back.
Yes I am one the guys who didn’t turn the movie off, yes I helped choose the movie, and no I’m not offended that she wrote this. Although I will admit I kind of felt like Dustin Hoffman in the Graduate when he took his date to a strip club after I read the post.
So I want to say this to the women in my life: I’m...
Coffee is Expensive
I was talking to some friends about dad jokes and we started talking about ways to say that coffee is expensive.
So far we got:
“A Latte? More like, a lot hey.”
“A Grande? More like, a grand hey.”
“Starbucks? More like, five bucks.”
Anybody have any more?
Making a Change
I’m at that point…
I feel it every once in a while and I can’t escape it. I get the urge and I need to make a big change. I need something different to happen.
I get restless. Like I am right now.
I don’t know if it’s about purpose or if it’s just boredom.
All I know is something has to change.
Career? Location? Church? Probably not. But maybe.

Coffee Cup
I’m standing downtown waiting for a train with a convenience store coffee in my hand. The cup is terrible and is dripping coffee all over my hands.
I’m very specific about how I put the lid on. I always feel for the fold on the cup and put the drinking part of the lid in the exact opposite side. This will ensure that if it is a poorly designed cup I’m not dripping coffee...
I don’t know if you know this but life is confusing and awesome all at the same time.
My brother is crashing at my place tonight which means he goes to bed when I’m done talking with him. I love talking to Chad because we’re so similar in so many ways, so I don’t feel like I have to explain myself, he just gets where I’m coming from.
I’ve had so many great...
Stuck in My Head
How do you get a song out of your head?
Listen to it? Listen to another song?
Or do you just go with it?
I feel like this has something to do with watching Tommy Boy.
Conversation with my boss
Boss: I've been really busy today.
Me: I hear you.
Boss: You haven't been busy.
Me: No but I can hear you. You sound busy.
Pass...
Years ago my friend and I came up with an idea to create a book that we consult every time something is about to come out of our mouths. When we want to say something we take out the book, look up what we were going to say, cross reference it with the situation we are in and decide if is appropriate to say, usually this results in the subject saying, “pass” and moving on to something...
Being a robot would be so much easier...
Emotions really just get in the way don’t they?
They’re so inconvenient.
If I had the choice I would just not have feelings. I’d just do what needs to get done and not let life affect me. Oh that would be better.
Maybe not… but that’s how we act.
We convince ourselves that nobody cares that we are having a rough time. We love to tell people when things are great...
I think lunchtime is about the worst time of day for me. Always having to sit...

Dumb Girls and Dirt Bags
I was talking to my friends last night. It was one of those conversations where you just move from one topic to another. The type that you have to trace back how you got to the topic you are on.
At one point we started talking about a dirt bag a couple of my friends know. A complete jerk. This led us to talk about why so many girls go for dirt bags which led us to why so many guys go for dumb...

Stuck
I got your invitation. Thank you. I would have liked to come to your party I would have told that joke that I tell whenever someone new is around. The one you hate. But I’m sorry. I can’t make it tonight I will have to decline. I’m stuck here in a place I know too well. That never looks familiar There is a wave. A forthcoming wave, A wall, A cliff, A moving...
End of Summer Twenty-Ten Mix
Every year since 2004 I’ve done an End of Summer mix. It’s become instinctive. As soon as it’s about the middle of August I start working on it. Usually it’s completed by the middle of August as well.
I’ve handed out the mix to a few people and promised to get them the track list. I like to make people listen to a mix a few times before I tell them what the songs...
Tired
Every centimeter of my body is tired today.
It was a gong show making coffee when I got to work.
This is what I posted on my face book status:
How to make coffee- 1: put the coffee on. 2: go back to pour a cup 3: realize the filter folded over and the maker is clogged and the pot is full of grinds. 4: Start rinsing the coffee pot. 5: Make lid close. Spill water all over counter. 6: Open new...
Change
Prop 8 was overturned by a judge today in California. The opposing side will file an appeal and it will probably go to the American supreme court. If this decision is upheld there then I imagine this would have a big impact on same-sex-marriage in the rest of their country.
This is a country where one state didn’t amend it’s constitution to allow interracial marriage until the year...

It's about me
A while back I was talking about one of my favorite bands mewithoutYou and my brother mentioned that he didn’t think they were that great.
That didn’t bother me, even though I love them to death. I couldn’t argue why they were great because there are other bands that are better and they are a tough band to get into. I love them so much because there is something that resonates...
What Keeps Me Sane
I’ve been really worried and discouraged about a few things in my life lately.
Here are some things i find necessary to get through these times.
What about you? What do you do?
Alone Time
I need to set time aside for myself. I cook a meal, I put on some records, and I think.
This is a good chance to organize my thoughts and figure out which worries are important and which ones are...
The Summer So Far
We have been in production for a month now. Which I can’t believe. It’s been really exciting, challenging, and encouraging.
I’m really proud of the team, the casting, the story, the shots. As far as I can tell it’s going to be a beautiful film.
I’ve never been so sure in my life that film is where I need to be.

Why Not?
This happened last night.
INT. HORCH HOUSE - EVENING
Kellen and Leigh are having a conversation about something, probably important.
Trevor interrupts the conversation.
TREVOR Hey have you heard?
KELLEN What?
TREVOR About the bird? (pause) (Starts Singing) I said a bird, bird, bird ahhh… bird is the word…
LEIGH Why?
TREVOR Why not?
KELLEN I feel...
Quoting
I had a conversation with my friend Daniel today via comments on my Facebook status about movie quotes.
Here is the list of the top ten movies I quote on a regular basis:
1. Anchorman 2. Rushmore 3. Bottle Rocket 4. Royal Tennenbaums 5. Say Anything… 6. High Fidelity 7. Independence Day 8. Punch Drunk Love 9. The Wrong Guy 10. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.
I also quote Dumb and...
I Don't Know
Donald Miller has been talking about theology on his blog lately and it made me think about the journey I went on in my faith over the last couple years. A lot of what he has been talking about is very close to some of the thoughts I’ve been having. Here are my thoughts on theology:

Things I'm not good at
We all have things we’re really good at and we all have things we aren’t so good at. These are a few of the latter.
Multitasking
This is something I’m really sure that most people are bad at. We are just in denial about it. This is why we get stuck behind someone at the mall who is trying to text and walk at the same time.
I notice this at work when I try to blog and...
